Fighting the battle against PTSD
While the military screens soldiers leaving Iraq and Afghanistan for mental health problems at least twice within six months of returning from combat, PTSD can show up several months or years after a person leaves the battlefield. Internists in community and Veterans Affairs hospitals alike must be able to spot and treat PTSD in patients, even when the disorder isn’t immediately apparent.

Presence of behavioral health condition didn't affect smoking quit rates during hospitalization
Similar rates of tobacco use were seen between inpatients with behavioral health conditions and controls postdischarge. However, after six months, patients with a behavioral health condition were less likely to report abstinence.

Being visited in the ICU associated with lower risk for psychiatric outcomes
A retrospective cohort study found that over a third of critically ill patients were diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder in the year after discharge, but risk was lower in the 96% of patients who received in-person visits from family and friends during their ICU stay.

ACA coverage expansion decreased frequent ED use among Medicaid, uninsured patients
Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the share of all California ED patients covered by Medicaid increased from 21.5% to 37.6%, and the share of uninsured patients decreased from 26.9% to 13.2%, the study found.
