Diabetes hospitalizations declined overall, increased in young adults

Data from the National Inpatient Sample and from 11 states showed that diabetes-specific U.S. hospitalizations decreased by 3.1% overall from 2008 to 2016/2017 but increased by 10.5% to 81.5% among patients 18 to 29 years of age.

Hospitalizations for opportunistic infections in HIV declined from 2011 to 2018

While the rate of hospitalization for an opportunistic infection per 100,000 U.S. patients with HIV went down, the associated inpatient mortality rate held stable, at 5.9%, and disparities by age, sex, race, and insurance status were found in a recent study.

Disparities seen in postdischarge care for Medicaid beneficiaries

A study in Alabama found that 58% of Medicaid beneficiaries with diabetes and heart failure did not receive guideline-recommended care after hospitalization. Risk of inadequate follow-up was particularly high among patients who were Black or Hispanic.
