Palliative care consults by default did not affect inpatient length of stay
Implementation of a default, opt-out palliative care consultation intervention for older hospital patients with advanced chronic illnesses did increase consult rates from 16.6% to 43.9% and significantly increased odds of discharge to hospice.

Analysis highlights poor outcomes, inconsistent treatment of catastrophic PE
Pulmonary embolism (PE) patients with hemodynamic collapse had a 42.1% risk of mortality, according to data from the Pulmonary Embolism Response Team registry. Only 13.3% of such patients underwent extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and 25% got systemic thrombolysis.

Study of Medicare claims finds good outcomes with hospital at home
Only 6.2% of Medicare fee-for-service patients who were hospitalized at home had to be escalated to another setting and 0.5% died during the admission, according to an analysis of 2022 to 2023 claims data. Their 30-day readmission rate was 15.6%.
