Teaming up to fight superbugs
Antimicrobial stewardship teams ramp up the fight against “superbugs.” The battle with drug-resistant bacteria has evolved into an all-out war in many hospitals, and fighting back with newer drugs no longer seems like the best defensive strategy. Instead, hospitals are deploying multidisciplinary teams to spread the word about prevention through judicious use of antibiotics.

Antibiotic stewardship strategies linked to lower antibiotic overuse at discharge
Hospitals that had review of antibiotics prior to discharge had significantly lower overuse of antibiotics at discharge in patients with community-acquired pneumonia or urinary tract infection, according to a recent survey of Michigan hospitals.

Stewardship project in U.K. hospitals reduced average antibiotic dose duration at one year
The intervention included a decision aid that prompted clinicians prescribing antibiotics to classify inpatients' infection risk as possible or probable and then choose between stopping or continuing the prescription at 48 to 72 hours. They also received audit and feedback.
