Empagliflozin shows clinical benefit in patients hospitalized with acute heart failure

Timely follow-up after hospitalization may reduce disparities in readmissions
In a retrospective cohort study of Medicare beneficiaries, follow-up within seven days of discharge was associated with reduced 30-day readmissions and was predicted to help mitigate higher readmission rates among Black and dual-eligible patients.

Azithromycin associated with less treatment failure than beta-lactams in hospitalized COPD patients
In a retrospective cohort study at six Michigan hospitals, treatment failed in 19.6% of patients with an acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who received azithromycin and 32.3% of those who received a beta-lactam.

Postdischarge intervention did not improve outcomes when added to information exchange
Veterans who were treated at a hospital or ED outside the Veterans Affairs (VA) system had similar readmission risk regardless of whether they received a care transitions intervention in addition to their usual primary care clinicians being notified of the non-VA encounter.
